SpamSieve updated to version 2.8.6

SpamSieve, aka the best 30 bucks you’ll ever spend on your Mac, has just been updated to version 2.8.6.

SpamSieve is an eMail client plug-in/application that provides powerful Bayesian spam filtering – much more accurate than the Junk Mail filters provided by most mail apps. It’s dirt-simple to install and control – and can be customized on how it interacts with the rest of your mail sorting rules. Actually, after you break it in for a day or so, there’s very little to do. It just works.

The plug-in is compatible with most Mac OS X eMail clients, including Apple Mail, Entourage (v.X through 2011), Mozilla Thunderbird 2, Eudora 5.2 or later (Sponsored or Paid), GyazMail, Mailsmith, Emailer, Postbox, and PowerMail. SpamSieve requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Examples: change the login background image, lock your Dock, tons others. You can either learn the ins and outs of Terminal and then Google/Bing for the hidden goodies, or you can get MacPilot. MacPilot also has some powerful system customization tools such as broadband connectivity optimization, handling log files, remove unneeded foreign localizations (you don’t really need Mayan Languages, do you), and more. ASM (Application Switcher Menu)ASM ($9.50 – direct) – Long-time Mac users may remember Switcher, which among other things placed a system-wide menu to the right side of the menubar which listed all of your open applications, so you can quickly hide, quit, switch between them. Extremely convenient. Somewhere along the line, the Mac OS gained and lost again that capability. With ASM (Application Switcher Menu) you can get it back. Free Trial Available.

It’s a Mac-specific keyboard (all the right Command keys, no funky Windows stuff) with two USB 2.0 ports, Volume and CD Eject Buttons. Great feel (I like a good old-fashioned “click”). IMHO, best bargain of the lot.

.Mac shutting down 9pm EDT July 9

Apple is about to turn the switch on its MobileMe service. In preparation, it will take .Mac offline at 9 PM EDT tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 9. According to the announcement:

“Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch. MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window.”
